Popular Books I'll Never Read

Okay, so for all the people who are new here, hi, I'm Lia. Many of you might know me from the sister blog [When Lia Reads], or you know me from discord or the Instagram [@whenliareads]. I decided to do this in a separate blog because first of all, clutter in the original blog, and secondly, why not? Different type of  content, different blog. So, after lots of thoughts and drafts about what I wanted to make,  here's what we're doing today.

POPULAR BOOKS I'LL POSSIBLY NEVER  READ
(AND WHY)

1. A Court of Thorns and Roses: Sarah J. Maas

Starting off with a strong name in the bookish industry, A Court of Thorns and Roses or ACOTAR as we know it, might be one of the most popular books, because of BookTok. Basically ACOTAR is a Beauty and The Beast retelling except make it faeries and stuff and make it adult I guess.

Why I'll never read it: Now, the reason why I swore myself off ACOTAR is because I attempted [read painfully tried] to read the first few chapters of it, and god fucking damn. I don't think I'll possibly ever be able to read faeries in fiction again. Like Twilight had ruined vampires and werewolves for me, ACOTAR possibly ruined faeries for me and I was glad to have actually read The Cruel Prince before I approached this book. Someone come and rescue me. Not even God himself can force me to read this book anymore.

2.. The Summer I Turned Pretty:  Jenny Han

So, The Summer I Turned Pretty is a sensation now, especially with the Netflix show which contains numerous eye candies in the name of Conrad and Jeremiah, delicious to the eye. And I think pretty much everyone else knows about the Lara Jean series, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, which I absolutely loved when I read it in 2020 and even watched the show starring Noah Centino.

Why I'll never read it: See, the thing I desperately hate is, love triangles. It should be called a love corner smh, when three people love each other, that's a love triangle. When two people love the same person, it's literally a love corner. Know your geometry people, do not flunk math class. And this book does exactly that. Also, it has two brothers falling in love with the same person. And do you know how messy that actually is? Like do you understand how many lines are blurred and how the circumstances are so shit? Like you're making her choose between not only two people but two people who'd known each other since forever and just driving them forever apart? That shit is just messed up yo, that's not for me.

3. Colleen Hoover Novels

Another hotshot name in the bookish world would be Colleen Hoover or as we like to say, CoHo. I'll be very honest, I have read three different Colleen Hoover novels and I think I'm done with them forever. I read Verity, It Ends With Us and Ugly Love. Yeah, I think only those three and I hope those three would be the last.

Why I'll never read it: Because there is no like variation. Okay, there might be a few variations, but it's basically the same. Overly ambitious girl who meets utterly messed up guy and the girl is like "I can fix him" like gurl, what is he, a broken record player? And what's worse is that the book doesn't even tend to focus on the main couple. More often than not the books focus on the past couple that had existed and it's kind of making me angry. AND THE RED FLAG ROMANCES? NOPE. TOXICITY CAN GO JUMP OFF A HILL FOR ME. So nope, no more Colleen Hoover books for me.

4. Mariana Zapata Novels

So one of the phrases I often tend to say is that, "The dream is to be a female lead in a Mariana Zapata novel". But I think that is what the saying for me is limited to that. Because Instagram reels make it so tempting to see all the hot pictures from Pinterest. But that's really all.

Why I'll never read it: I simply cannot bring myself to read it. I mean, I have tried innumerable times since the beginning of the year and I'm not even joking considering I've read like 200 books already. It seems like my brain automatically shuts down. Plus I've been told a lot of times that Mariana Zapata novels follow the same pattern, kind of a lot like Colleen Hoover. One might say that I've been gaslit, but sorry Mariana, it will be a goooooood while before I actually approach one of your novels. I hope you really don't mind.

5. A Song of Ice and Fire:  George R. R. Martin

So like a this point, if you do not know what A Song of Ice and Fire is, I'm very sorry to say that you've been living under a rock. Okay, A Song of Ice and Fire might not ring a bell, but I guess A Game of Thrones Surely does. It should, because Emilia Clarke did a gorgeous job in it.

Why I'll never read it: Do I even need to elaborate on this point? I could go on and on and on and the list wouldn't exhaust because it's so long. Okay, addressing the most obvious reason: incest. I don't think I'll read anything that contains incest though. I did watch The Irregular At Magic High School but I literally did not know it was incest and I was like 11 or something.  Also like the intense violence, I do not think that I am cut out for stuff like this. Man it might just trigger everything for me if I ever read it, and I do not think that should happen.

6. A Little Life: Hanya Yanagihara

A Little Life was basically THE sensation in 2021, if I remember correctly. It just blasted throughout the whole of tik tok being named as the saddest and the most triggering book. Also, I actually heard about it from a friend [Noah, if you're reading this, know that I miss you a lot, friend] in a server I was in.

Reasons I'll never read it: One of them is like the immensely triggering stuff that exists here. And also I tried to read it during the time I started this blog, you know, just to give it a quick jump start, but good lord the pace. The pace is just not my vibe. It also made my head ache with how slow this thing was moving along so I just decided off it. And also the length, 800+ pages, are you fricking kidding me? The longest book I own is like 500 pages and I am not going beyond that. I can read 1k pages, but only in the form of 3 350-450 page novels. SHEESH.

7. It Happened One Summer: Tessa Bailey

So, I'm here, even though I have mentioned plenty of times about how I feel about Tessa Bailey's novels. I have read two of them: My Killer Vacation and Fix Her Up, both of which I did not blog due to various reasons.

Why I'll never read it: So the various reasons I hadn't blogged Tessa Bailey's other novels is precisely the reason I have sworn myself off her other novels. It's like this same skeleton plot: girl who's underestimated in her field and apparently no one likes her and this guy who's apparently tremendously hot but has this really bad [read playboy] reputation and they literally cannot keep their libido in control once they see each other. And not gonna lie, there is a LOT of fucking, like a LOT. And the smut doesn't even interest me, because there's no build up or foreplay, there's straight up just primal fucking. Or as our beloved tags love to say: Porn With Plot.

8. Cassandra Clare Novels

I think it might be safe to call Cassandra Clare a giant in the writing world. Like even before I got into active reading since 2013, Cassandra Clare has been like a big name in the mouths of booktubers and bookstagrammers. She's like one of the OG famous authors before BookTok happened. Before TikTok even existed actually.

Reasons I'll never read it: The main reason is clear is that Cassie Clare writes thick af novels. Like I went to StarMark 2 months ago on my brother's birthday, and the sheer size of the novel just scared the living daylights out of me. I have ADHD and there is no way in heck that I'll have been able to actually ever get to reading it. Another reason is the amount of lawsuits following her. Apparently she plaigiarized a lot of fanfics and stuff and that she just converted it from them. I don't remember the full thing, but I guess it was something like that.

9. The Bridgertons: Julia Quinn

Of course, with the recent increase of adaptations of novels by our dearly beloved Netflix and Amazon Prime, the Bridgertons have been a really famous show, with a season three on the way. Congratulations on that, by the way, to Bridgertons. That's what the show is called, right?

Why I'll never read it: I swear to God I have never cringed so hard reading the edits and watching the aesthetic and stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love period dramas, and I think Kiera Knightley looks absolutely gorgeous in them. And Kiera Knightley is absolutely built for period dramas [I know Kiera Knightley is not in it which by far, I think is an absolute crime]. But yeah, I don't think I can vibe with the show, which makes me stay away from the books because I cringe so hard because of the hype. If anything is hyped a lot, I'll just not want it anymore.

There are probably more, but these are all I can name off the top of my head at the moment!!! Will return with pt. 2 if I remember!
